DescriptionThe following awards will be given to outstanding research papers submitted to the conference:

HANS MEUER AWARD
The Hans Meuer Award honors the most outstanding research paper submitted to the conference’s Research Papers Committee. This award has been introduced in the memory of the late Dr. Hans Meuer, general chair of the ISC conference from 1986 through 2014, and co-founder of the TOP500 project. From all submitted research papers, the Research Papers Committee will select the overall best paper for the award.

GAUSS AWARD
The Gauss Award is sponsored by the German Gauss Center for Supercomputing, which is a collaboration of the German national supercomputing centers at Garching, Jülich and Stuttgart.

DescriptionThe ISC Welcome Party is famous for its food, drinks, entertainment and amiable atmosphere. It gives you the opportunity to visit vendors and service providers of your choice, and also socialize with other HPC enthusiasts. An entertaining party duo - consisting of a DJane and a saxophonist - will be on the exhibition floor this year, to add swing and groove to the exhibition opening. Description“Every few years there is a university research project that thinks they are about to overturn the tried-and-true architecture that John von Neumann and Alan Turing would recognize — and unicorns will dance and butterflies will sing.” -- so the well known consultant and founder of “Silicon Insider” Jim Turley. And so he sees the classic architectures going on with with classic CMOS-technology in somewhat smaller structures -- but much slower than before, may be with only 10 percent more performance in five years. Will that be enough for the new challenges? Challenges like deep learning where the classic digital architectures will face new competition : quantum, neuromorphic … and even analog computing.

More and more we see limits in the digital space, especially with the usual CMOS technology. 7 nm CMOS, maybe 5 nm but then? Old laws, rules and scalings like the well known from Moore or Dennard are not valid any more (or have to be very much re-interpreted). The performance of sequential computing (i.e. single thread) has hardly increased during the last 10 years, IPC – Instructions per Cycle stuck at about 5 instructions per cycle.
So where are the really new ideas for digital computing in the future? What have the big companies Intel, IBM, ARM, AMD, Nvidia, NEC, ShenWei … on their roadmap and in their quivers? New ideas not only in manufacturing but in the principal architecture?

It seems that Intel as one of the biggest players in the scene has for the general purpose CPUs only a non earthquaking looking roadmap for the next years: Cannon Lake, Ice Lake, Tiger lake, Any Lake … But Intel bought a lot of innovative companies and patents with not yet seen ideas like Transmeta’s translation technique or Softmachine’s VISC ( a kind of reverse Hyper-Threading to work with several cores at one thread). NVidia is looking for complety new memory architectures, NEC is re-establishing the idea of vector computing. And what can we expect with reconfigurable hardware (FPGAs)?

In this session we will give four representatives of the main current architecture lines -- CPU, GPU, Vector Processors and FPGA , four architects and not from marketing, the chance – not to praise their, current products -- but to give us a clue about what innovations we can expect in the next 5 to 10 years.+.

DescriptionIn this session we will address the challenges of large cities and complex urban environments from several points of view and review how HPC and AI can help to increase energy efficiency, ease mobility and convenience of living and at the same time reduce the environmental impact.

Mary Ann will kick off the session by focusing on urban systems in general that attract more and more people and consequently consume more than 70% of energy and GHG (Greenhouse Gas Emissions) in most countries. She will also present results from a related joint Exascale program that involves several US National Laboratories.

The first talk will be complemented by Martin Hauschild who will focus on the challenges car manufacturers are facing given new environmental rulings and limits but also at the balance of general transport systems vs. individual mobility. In this context the potential of IoT and the promise of autonomous vehicles and autonomous operation of transport systems will be addressed.

Laurence Liew will provide a different aspect in this session with a specific focus on the complex urban infrastructure of Singapore and how its Government is accelerating AI adoption with dedicated initiatives in AI Research, AI Technology and AI Industry.

We will conclude the session with a short 15 minute panel discussion where the audience can challenge the speakers with questions and encourage a lively discussion between the speakers and the attendees.
