SUMMARY:Combining HTM with RCU to Speed Up Graph Coloring on Multicore Pla
 tforms
DESCRIPTION:Research Paper\n\nCombining HTM with RCU to Speed Up Graph Col
oring on Multicore Platforms\n\nGiannoula, Goumas, Koziris\n\nAbstract. Gr
aph algorithms are hard to parallelize, as they exhibit\nvarying degrees o
f parallelism and perform irregular memory accesses.\nGraph coloring is a
well studied problem, that colors the vertices of a\ngraph, such that no a
djacent vertices have the same color. This is a necessity for a large numb
er of applications that require a coloring with few colors in near-linear
time. In this work, we propose a simple and fast parallel graph coloring a
lgorithm, well suited for shared memory\narchitectures. Our algorithm empl
oys Hardware Transactional Memory\n(HTM) to detect coloring inconsistencie
s between adjacent vertices, and\nexploits Read-Copy-Update (RCU) to enabl
e high performance and ensure correctness.\n\nWe evaluate our algorithm on
an Intel Haswell server using large-scale\nsynthetic and real-world graph
s, chosen to vary in terms of density and\nstructure. With 14 threads, we
 achieved a geometric-mean speedup of\n4.35 and a maximum speedup of 11.44.
