SUMMARY:Towards Global Cloud-Resolving Weather and Climate Prediction at E
 xascale
DESCRIPTION:Focus Session\n\nTowards Global Cloud-Resolving Weather and Cl
imate Prediction at Exascale\n\nNeumann\n\nGlobal high-resolution, that is
kilometer-scale, simulations enable reliable and accurate weather and cli
mate predictions. By resolving clouds and storms, uncertainties in the mod
el parametrization are reduced. This is particularly expected to improve f
uture climate models and thus enable a more accurate prediction of, for ex
ample, extreme climate events. Applying a kilometer-scale model and aiming
at a production-ready simulation throughput of 1 simulated year per compu
te day will, however, result in a huge amount of data (in the order of TB
and PB) and require exascale compute capacity.\n\nBy enhancing the product
ivity and efficiency of the entire simulation procedure, the Centre of Exc
ellence in Simulation of Weather and Climate in Europe (ESiWACE) intends t
o advance numerical climate and weather simulation on high performance com
puting platforms. One major attempt is the establishment of high-resolutio
n demonstrators, which showcase the computability on PetaFLOP supercompute
rs. With these demonstrators, the simulation of atmosphere-only and atmosp
here-ocean coupled processes is to be conducted.\n\nIn my talk, I will pre
sent ESiWACE and address current developments of different models used in
the community with regard to performance and scalability. I will further d
iscuss a performance prediction approach which shall facilitate the inter-
and, at a later stage, extrapolation of performance data to predict the a
ctual run times of the complex (in terms of large number of parameters) we
ather and climate simulations. I further point at a recently evolving inte
r-comparison project that is meant to foster international exchange on glo
bal high-resolution models.\n\nPasses: Conference Pass, Exascale Systems,
