 ices across many industry sectors. It’s also expensive and complex to use 
 the first time a company decides to adopt it. But the benefits are clear a
 nd modern industrial economies need increase its uptake if they are to sta
 y globally competitive. In Europe a number of projects have been funded un
 der the I4MS, “Innovation for Manufacturing SMEs”, programme. This talk wi
 ll describe the largest of them – the Fortissimo projects – which have hel
 ped almost 100 manufacturing SMEs in Europe to take their first steps in H
