SUMMARY:Bugs and Speed in HPC Applications: Past, Present, and Future
DESCRIPTION:Focus Session\n\nBugs and Speed in HPC Applications: Past, Pre
sent, and Future\n\nHollingsworth\n\nThere is a bug in my program. My appl
ication doesn’t run fast enough. These have been two of the most enduring
and ever present attributes of HPC, probably computing in general. For a
lmost as long, researchers have endeavored to create tools to help solve t
hose problems. In this session, I will briefly recap the history of tools
for performance and correctness debugging, highlighting the successes (an
d often failures) of these efforts. I will also highlight some of the att
ributes of current and planned systems such as increased scale, fault tole
rance mechanisms, and domain specific languages that make good performance
tools and debuggers harder to create. I will conclude with a summary of i
deas and approaches that could allow the HPC community to effectively addr
ess these issues.\n\nPasses: Conference Pass, Performance Analysis and Opt
imization, Performance Tools, Scientific Software Development\n\nTag: Conf
erence Pass, Performance Analysis and Optimization, Performance Tools, Sci
 entific Software Development
