SUMMARY:Fluid Structure Interaction Study for Hemodynamic Evaluation of Tr
anscatheter Aortic Valve Replacement Device using HPC
DESCRIPTION:Focus Session\n\nFluid Structure Interaction Study for Hemodyn
amic Evaluation of Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement Device using HPC
\n\nSodhani\n\nTranscatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) is swiftly be
coming a standard for high risk surgical patients with positive clinical r
esults. Hence, efforts are being made to expand TAVR to low risk surgical
patients. However, recent evidence of leaflet thrombosis and reduced leafl
et mobility in TAVR devices has raised concerns of long-term valve durabil
ity. Risk factor of thrombosis in TAVR patients remain poorly defined, but
data suggests that hemodynamics in the vicinity of the valve prosthesis i
s a critical factor in the development of leaflet thrombosis. In conjuncti
on with experiments, FSI can greatly augment the knowledge gained for thro
mbus assessment related to artificial heart valves. It can be used for hig
h-resolution evaluation of flow parameters (e.g. wall shear stress, detail
ed location of blood clot) which are otherwise difficult/impossible to mea
sure in-vivo or in-vitro. These parameters can be used to optimize valve d
esign while also allowing patient specific evaluation of TAVR devices. In
case of a patient specific evaluation of TAVR devices, thrombus assessment
would aid surgeons in pre-operative planning with respect to the choice o
f TAVR device and its placement in patient’s anatomy. But, such assessment
can be computationally time consuming and exhaustive. High performance co
mputing (HPC) would assist in significantly reducing the computation time.
In this work, we test the capabilities of HPC for hemodynamics assessment
using FSI method for a TAVR device in both ideal and patient specific env
ironment.\n\nPasses: Conference Pass, Clouds and Distributed Computing, Pe
